you know when you're watching a gig and the performer says "can I get a bit more vocal in the monitor"?

why don't they just have a mixing desk for the monitors onstage so they can change it themselves?

or a little console where they can press a button saying "more vocal in monitors" so the sound engineer gets the message without the gig having to be interrupted?
